Welcome to our new ‘home’!

Well we have been relatively quiet lately (be nice to us; we both work full time jobs and one of us has multiple side projects while the other has a 2 year old).  The great news is that we’re as dedicated to keeping this community together as we can be….and we definitely need your help to do it!

We’re going to be working on a couple of projects, and would love your help to do it.

Local endeavor: identify NLC restaurants that offer dishes that are vegan (0r easily modified to be so) and extra bonus points to restaurants who understand and appreciate the value in accomodating their vegan patrons.

What we need help with:

  • Determining a method; do we create a survey and mail/email to local restaurants? (personally think this might be the easiest) OR do we set out to EAT EVERYWHERE? hahaha – might be more fun but would probably take us the next 5 years to complete.
  • If we do the Survey: we need your input on what questions are necessary to ask.  If we do the write-ups by visit than we need volunteers to…well…go eat and ask questions. :D

WWW endeavor: collecting a group of websites that offer valuable information to vegans (and those who are interested in eating healthier diets).

What we need help with:

  • Tell us your favorites, send an email or post it on the fb page or here as a comment.
  • Tell us what kind of information you’re looking for and we’ll help do some searching to try and find a great resource.
  • Help us manage accuracy (often when sites try to create resource lists the websites they link to disappear…we don’t want that to happen and we’ll need your help to review the list every now and then).
  • Decide where to ‘house’ the list, on the blog or on the fb page?

Send us an email with your feedback!

Did You Miss It?!…We Didn't! Here's what's up.

We spent the better portion of an hour discussing what the assets in this area are vs the liabilities.  We were split up into 5 project groups of about 10 people each which allowed all of us participating to really have our voice heard.  We took all those assets & liabilities and tried to form some kind of ‘vision’ for what this area can be in the future and what we want for its image.  To the best of our ability, here is a list of what the participating citizens called assets/liabilities & finally ideas for the vision….

Assets:
-Waterfront park
-Shaw Mansion
-Starr Street
-Historic grid (aka: land lot plots) still in tact
-multi-purpose area (retail, residential, food, service, etc)
-”cultural hub” (emerging artist community)
-Hygienic Art Park
-Sidewalk accessibility

Liabilities:
-Safety – sense of…is it a perception or a reality that area is unsafe after dark?
-Traffic Structure (Bank/Eugene Oneil = oneways, why? can it or should it change to two way?)
-Lacking Pedestrian Safety in cross-walks
-Lacking Bike Safety while traveling on roads
-Parking – too much? too little? not planned well. ugly (open lots on Greene) and ‘unsafe’. poor accessibility for individuals with disabilities.
-Loud music after dark. (err….NLCVS is partial to this being an asset….but…a community is made up of varying opinions and this was one of them).

Vision:
-Encouragement of multi-use entrepreneurial/local development
-Greater and Safer connection between residential and commercial areas
-Increasing density (in terms of tenancy in buildings for businesses and residential apartments)
-Destination spot that represents the varied interests of the New London populace
-Small boat-friendly access to shore, look at mystic/stongington as models to encourage boat launching and boat “parking” for shopping/eating….would include updating the water-facing sides of buildings on S.Water St.
-Focus on the concept of developing community.
AND – June 8th (assuming same time of 7pm – but confirmation will come later) is the next community involvement meeting.  We would REALLY love to see some more of the young-professionals involved in New London represented in June!
Keep in touch!

Planning a vision….envisioning a Plan!

You heard it here first folks (or maybe you didn’t)…either way…the City Planner of New London, CT is inviting the concerned and interested citizens of the city to partake in a discussion about the city’s future development.  NLCVS is invested in our communities and therefore two of the friendly faces at this session will be OURS!  We certainly encourage you to join if you have thoughts on the topic.

via The Day we learned that, the City Planner said:
“It’s a visioning exercise. We want to engage participants in what they would like to see in their neighborhoods.
…The meeting will start at 7 p.m. [Wednesday May 5] at the [New London] Public Library, 63 Huntington St.”

Main focus appears to be on development by way of encouraging the type of businesses in the area that the community needs and supporting those businesses that already exist by talking about the challenges of infrastructure (aka: parking -enough/safe/accessible, sidewalks, bike paths, public transit, etc).

Personally – NLCVS has a few ideas up their sleeve….how bout you? Got any you want to share? Comment below we’ll be glad to voice some inspired ideas!

Oh and here’s a link to the original article that is quoted above:

Roll Call!!!!

This Sunday (May 2) we are kicking off the first event hosted by the NLC Vegan Society by participating in the Worldwide Vegan Bake Sale!  We are very excited to start engaging the vegan community in Southeastern CT with something that is so much fun.

In all of our glee we are starting to talk about future events, educational opportunities, FOOD PARTIES, and more.  But here’s the thing….WE DON’T KNOW ALL OF YOU!  So please….introduce yourselves below by posting a comment.

Don’t know what to say? Well let us know….Are you vegan? or possibly thinking about becoming a vegan, maybe you think vegan food is particularly spectacular, or you LOVE the positive impact vegan living has on the environment, or you’re reading a book about the impact a vegan diet has on diabetes and looking for support and recipe ideas and or and or and or….  whatever your story is… we are looking forward to getting to know you.

We are entirely aware that not everyone is a fan of commenting on public forums…sooo….you can also shoot us an email at nlcvegansociety@gmail.com.  In fact, if you’d like to get direct updates when we set up an event or are looking for feedback please definitely send an email and say “add me” in the subject line so we can put you on our distribution list.
